Tips and Tricks

Getting the most out of your labels.

  1. It is recommended to try your labels out on a test page before printing onto an actual SmartTAB label sheet. Every printer behaves differently and it is best to catch problems on the test sheet.
  2. If you don't need to print an entire sheet of labels, print labels starting from the bottom of the sheet first. Remove the printed labels and cut off the loose part of the frame as shown. Then the rest of the label sheet can be used at a later time. Do not put an untrimmed sheet with missing labels into the printer since it may jam or print onto an empty space and damage the printer.

Making your test pages last longer.

  1. Since most printers will not have left-to-right alignment problems if printed at the correct scale, the test page is best used to assess top-to-bottom alignment of the labels. If you only print one column for each test print (and print a different column each time), each test page can be used multiple times.
  2. The test pages are symmetrical. Aditional tests can be performed by printing on the back of the test page and holding it up to the light to check the alignment.
  3. You can photocopy the test sheet onto a piece of A4 paper to make additional test sheets. Take care to align the original correctly or the copy will not have the alignment boxes in the right place.
  4. A blank sheet of paper can be used as a test page. Hold the paper up to the light against another test page or against a SmartTAB label sheet to check the alignment. Warning: If your printer has an auto-paper sensing feature, labels that print correctly on a plain sheet of paper may only print correctly on a SmartTAB sheet once this feature has been disabled.
  5. An old SmartTAB sheet with the labels removed also provides a good template to check alignment: place the used SmartTAB over the blank test page and make sure the printing shows through in the empty windows.

Troubleshooting

When I print my test page, the printing is too high or too low.

  1. Ensure that the test page or label page is correctly oriented and aligned in the document feeder.
  2. Review the Printing Instructions for the format of template you are using:
  3. All printers are different and some have hidden settings that may affect the printing. Check to see if your printer has any auto-sensing capabilities or auto-scaling capabilities. Deactivate any features which might automatically adjust the size or alignment of your print job. The settings in the template are set to print correctly without any additional adjustments being made.
  4. If the PDF template does not align correctly after following the print instructions, try using the Excel template. To fine tune the alignment, adjust the top margin of the document. Once you have achieved a good alignment, save the template as a new file.

When I print my test page, the printing is too far left or right.

  1. Make sure you are using the correct template - the SmartTAB-60 template for the sheets with 60mm wide labels (3 columns and 4 rows) and the SmartTAB-30 template for the sheets with 30mm wide labels (6 columns and 4 rows).
  2. Ensure that the paper size setting for the printer is set to "A4" (portrait orientation) and that the test page or label sheet is aligned properly in the document feeder.
  3. If you are using plain paper or a photocopy of a test page, make sure that the paper size is A4. When using a photocopied template, ensure that the template has copied accurately to the top left-hand corner of the page
  4. If the PDF templates do not align correctly after following the print instructions, try using the Excel template. To fine tune the alignment, adjust the left margin of the document. Once you have achieved a good alignment, save the template as a new file.
